Successful businesses today are in the midst of a digital transformation. They are moving to hybrid cloud and multi-cloud environments, embracing open source and standardization, keenly focused on business agility and continuity, yet adamant about maintaining the highest levels of resiliency and security. IBM Z customers are at an inflection point: they must embrace these concepts while also maximizing their infrastructure investment. Over the years, they have trusted the “always-on” IBM Z platform to run their business. Going forward, to achieve their digital transformation objectives, they need to build on that trust by understanding the value of Linux and Containers on IBM Z plus the unique and important role that IBM Z plays in a hybrid cloud and multi-cloud environment.

In this half-day workshop, we present IBM’s strategy for digital transformation and commitment to hybrid cloud and multi-cloud. We then build on the proven qualities of the IBM Z platform – superior performance, resiliency and security – by expanding the conversation to include Linux and Container technology. We present the technical and competitive advantages of running Linux and Containers on Z compared to commodity servers, for traditional business workloads but also for transformational workloads (e.g., cloud-native) running in a hybrid multi-cloud environment. We explore numerous uses cases for Linux on IBM Z – from simply extending a backend database or consolidating commodity servers, to embedding Linux Containers into z/OS and extending z/OS-based microservices with APIs. Finally, we bring together the full picture of IBM Z with private clouds and multi-clouds, fully demonstrating how modernization of the mainframe is integral to digital transformation and delivers the richest value. We conclude with a module on Next Steps, pointing the attendees to resources for further information, and providing guidelines on follow-up actions. As usual, the presentations will be supplemented with demonstrations and videos where appropriate, and audience participation will be strongly encouraged.
